Canada Express Entry from Africa: How the Points System Really Works

Canada Express Entry from Africa: How the Points System Really Works

Express Entry is not an application you submit and wait on. It is a pool you sit in, ranked against everyone else in it. Canada periodically invites the highest-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residence. If your score is below the cut-off in a given round, nothing happens — you are not rejected, you are simply not invited yet.

The three programs behind it

Express Entry manages applications for:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

You must be eligible for at least one of them before your profile enters the pool at all.

The part you can control

Your rank comes from the Comprehensive Ranking System score. Some inputs you cannot change — age is the obvious one. Others you can, and this is where effort actually pays:

  • Language. Your test scores in English, and separately in French, are worth a large share of the total. Retaking a test after focused preparation is usually the cheapest score increase available to you.
  • Education. Get your qualification assessed through an Educational Credential Assessment so it counts.
  • Skilled work experience, both foreign and Canadian.
  • A provincial nomination, which is worth so much that it effectively guarantees an invitation.
  • Your spouse's language and education, if you apply together.

What this means practically

If your score is short, the useful question is not "which agent can get me in" — it is "which of those inputs can I raise, and by how much". A language retake and a credential assessment cost a fraction of what agents charge, and they move your actual score.

Category-based rounds also exist, where Canada invites candidates with specific work experience or French ability rather than purely by score. Which categories are active changes, so check the official page rather than an old article.

Before you pay anyone

Immigration consultants in Canada must be licensed. You can verify a consultant's registration yourself on the regulator's public register. An unlicensed "agent" charging you for advice is committing an offence, and their mistakes become your refusal.

Create your profile yourself first. It is free, and it tells you your own score before anyone quotes you a price.
